What exactly is an eclipse, and what can eclipses teach us about the Sun? 🌒☀️

DIAS researchers explain the science behind yesterday’s eclipse, from viewing the Sun safely using a telescope projection to some of the big questions we are still asking about our nearest star.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at DIAS Dunsink Observatory yesterday. It was wonderful to welcome so many people and share both the experience of the eclipse and the science behind it.

🔔New Paper Alert🔔

A new paper led by DIAS student Christopher Burger-Scheidlin has confirmed Abeona, a newly identified supernova remnant and one of the faintest ever detected in radio light 📡

Named after the Roman goddess associated with outward journeys, Abeona was observed using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) as a faint, extended radio shell - the remains of a stellar explosion expanding into the surrounding interstellar material

We want to say a huge congratulations to our section administrator Dr. Simon Nugent who had his convocation ceremony in at Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University on Saturday 🎉

He has graduated with a PhD in Musicology with his dissertation titled "Beyond the Silver Screen: The Relocation of Film Music in Digital Culture", and we are all immensely proud of him for this tremendous achievement, so please join us in congratulating him 🥂

Among the many wonderful characters of Ulysses, including Leopold Bloom after whom the day is named, you will also find references to Dunsink Observatory as the source of Dunsink time 🕰️

The society hosts a wealth of knowledge on many aspects of astronomical history and we were thrilled to host them on their trip to Ireland, which also included a visit to our AOI partners @birrcastledemesne 🔭
